The festival promises to include eco-friendly elements, fun for youth, local musical talent, and interesting vendor booth displays. A goal of the event is to ensure a family-friendly, health-conscious, educational, sustainable (i.e. “green”) experience that captures the intense spirit, style, music, athleticism, and art that makes skateboarding appealing to both youth and families throughout Southern California.
The Slam promises to be a unique charity fundraiser by appealing to a growing demographic – skateboard enthusiasts. Participation in skateboarding increased by 74% between 1998 and 2007 to 10.1 million participants nationwide, the fastest growth of any sport in the United States (according to the National Sporting Goods Association).
Net event proceeds will benefit educational scholarships to battered women and their children in their quest to achieve personal freedom, physical safety and economic independence. Scholarship recipients are clients of Human Options and can use awards for 2-year educational programs, 4-year institutions, and/or vocational training. Scholarships have been bestowed annually since 2004. As the awardees are often seeking shelter in emergency situations, the vast majority are considered to be low- to moderate-income.
The Slam introduces tangible opportunities for brand awareness and promotion. The teen audience is a significant target demographic for the event. Active with social media, it’s anticipated that teens will promote the event through informal networks and word-of-mouth as a “must-attend” festival. In addition, sponsorship commitments result in formal sponsorship benefits for months in advance. Thus, exhibitors and funders are sure to gain unique exposure as participating sponsors.
The Slam at Volcom Park Costa Mesa will be an event to remember.
