ive played the upright bass before. so does that mean i was sexy and now im just icky?

i never use picks, only when i plan on strumming more than one string fast. but that is very rare.

I play through a junky 4x10 carvin amp, w/ a carvin 350 head (its pretty old), and I have a fender p-bass. Bass is f*$#k@#g awesome. Of course I play with my fingers and have been playing the last 2 and 1/2 years.

But I want to get a better rigg set up for shows and I dont know if I should get a new bass or amp/ head?

Does anyone have any opinions which should come first?

How hard is it to learn to play upright bass? I don't know how to play any instruments, but I want to learn how to play upright bass. Also, I have small hands (I am a girl, afterall) will my hands fit around the bass to play?

JxCxHxC
06-06-2002, 02:32 PM
well i dont reccomend that you start of with an upright bass. you should just start off with a bass guitar and get the feel of it. also, having small hands would mean harder work for you to be able to play the upright bass. but you should just go to a music store, where they sell instruments, and play a bass guitar and then play an upright and see which you are more comfortable with. namean?

i think you should really work on scales. those build up your chops. also work on your creativity cause that is a big part of being a bassist. and try to play different types of music. go to www.activebass.com. and click on lessons. you can get cool riffs there on different types of styles. KEEP PLAYING THE BASS!

I play a tenor saxophone and I am planning on using it in a "thrash" circumstance.

Jazz makes me claustrophobic.

I play the keys. Took lessons for 1-2 years and sped past all the other students, but I never got the hang of the whole reading sheet music. I practice on and off... and if you ever pick up an instrument when your hands are cold... it fucking sucks...

Played keys for a band. Honorable Mention. Band broke up because of non commited guitar player.

I have also played upside-down right handed bass for a band before... we broke up shortly after... Funny how people looked at me odd for playing the damn thing upside down and not playing that long, but still being able to learn anything that someone went to teach me... though I wasn't that fast... ah well. I think I should pick it up again some day... maybe regular right handed though... it'd take me a bit.

I played left handed guitar for a few months and slowly crept up on my brother who had been playing it for about 3-5 years... though I was never commited enough to stick with it.

I sometimes sat down at drum sets and did rudimentary beats... all from watching people, too.
