Yea, yea, I know, maby a show review from NC isn't very apropriate for an OC forum, but since it's the same band anyhoo, might as well give a heads up...

Well, considering that this show took place on a Monday, I wasn't expecting there to be too big of a crowd. And suffice to say, I was correct. While there were certantly enough, the school day HUGHLEY reduced the amount of people there, and even though as the bands played everybody huddled up to the front, there was still plenty of space to move around and not feel too cramped...

if you weren't in the front, that is.

Anyway, backtracking a little, after giving the folks my ticket and recieving my "underage" wrist band thing, I proceeded over to the merch booth. Unfortunetley, the band was (for once) hugley lacking in interesting stuff to buy (which, to a consumptive prick such as myself, is a quarter of the fun of going to a show), and the vacancy left by 45 Grave ( half the reason I wanted to go to this show...keep adding the fractions) meant that South Carolinians Forgotten Youth instead got to set up a booth and play. Well, the band didn't have any recordings, telling me that the money made off of the shirts and buttons they had was going to the fun. Fair enough, though I wasn't gonna buy a damn shirt of some band I never even heard. So, after pacing around for and checking out all the people that don't live near me, I went in to wait for Forgotten Youth to take stage.

Well, with a name as interesting and original as "Forgotten Youth", I defenetly had high expectations, but alas, alas. The band pretty much did by the numbers punk rock, and looked the part as well. Pretty much two little Tim Armstrongs on stage, along with a little Sid Vicious, complete with an undershirtless jacket and lock-and-chain neckless. The band ripped through a rather monotonous set of basic casualties esque type street punk, and while nice guys, I simply wasn't diggin' the sound...too rehashed. I give 'em credit for just being up there doing what they do, but just nothing new at all. The best part was watching the Nazi skinhead bop around in the pit. Given the area I was in, probally a product of incest. I digress.

Anyway, after a very dull set, Forgotten Youth split, and I waited on The 2005 Misfits, which as most know, is now 2/3rds Black Flag. After about 45 minutes of wait, the lights darkened, and the theme from the movie "Holloween" played, with strobe lights flashing...the crowd started getting louder, untill finally the crew unhooked the tarp that hung to the back of the stage, to reveal Robo on a big, spiked out drum set. Jerry and Dez pranced on up to the stage, and upon Jerry counting off, the music began. The crowd reaction was great, and the boys were on top of their game, ripping through easily 50-60 songs, some of which were Dez sung Black Flag numbers. There was very little breathing space between the set, and songs practically started before the previous had come to an end. Despite this (and the habit that many "reunion" punk bands tend to have these days of playing their songs as fast as possible, even at the sacrafice of good melody), the band was very tight, and the boys really, really put on a show. Jerry was bantering between the audience, slapping kids high fives, and even Dez (who looks more dead yet less like Alice Cooper from last time I saw him) got in a couple of words.

As the show ended, the band made one encore set, after which Dez came over and slapped my hand (with some considerable reach), which was cool. I always enjoy those kinda things. What can I say, I'm fruity like that...bit of hero worship I suppose. Lastly, Jerry stuck around to sign anybody's stuff and take pictures with those who wanted them. Nice guy...

The point is, is that putting whatever feelings you have towards the validity of the new Misfits lineups aside, along with the crazy amount of marketing of the band, these guys really do know how to show a crowd a good time. Even if it isn't the quintessential Mifits exirience, the band still sounds great, and the lineup truley is all-star. Recomended.
