Hey guys,
long time non-OC lurker finally posting. great forums! i love the history you guys (and girls) have been posting. i'm a huge fan of california punk rock, especially OC, but grew up in AZ after the prime times.

i was hoping someone could tell me a bit about the simpletones and their lineage. i know some of the guys were in the klan and the chiefs, but don't really know who. were they even OC?

thanks for any responses.

Here's some of the pre-simpletones lineage....

These guys were post RockKandy (with Vince Neil) pre Simpletones, they were from Covina.

Jay Lansford, Kendall Behnke and Danny Ruiz (and Tommy Ruiz) were in a band around 1977-78 called Child Abuse. Later on, Jerry Koskie, Snickers and Rabit joined and the band changed into The Simpletones
I have 3 tracks from a rehearsal, one of them being Cardboard Crotch.
I'll throw 'em on here soon..

Simpletones, we're Covina, West Covina--kids. RiK' L' RiK protoge's and
even beyond that with "F-WORD" Snickers came to H.B. and sang for
the KLAN with Steve Huston, after Jessie Rodriquez, left.

When they broke up, we converted KLAN bass player Johnny Bat,
to drums..for social task. Cover Girls was a Steve Huston song.
Pushin' too hard--played to the rockabilly side of Huston's guitar.
That was a cover song. Simpletones, CALIFORNIA--was Snickers
brainchild, with a surf/skate beach flavor. Dusting off the cob-webs
my memory, recalls KLAN H.B. and Simpletones, were Covina.

But, they intermingled the sound, during the 1st Generation, 78/79.

That is until poshboy ripped em' off. Then, all bets were off.

I am familiar with all of the EARLY Klan songs. Some, I cannot
mention here--in this politically correct charged bullshit.....

But, I can assure you--they were ABSOLUTELY cool songs.

SIMPLETONES, were a fun band. Very nifty 50's bubble gum beach.

After those bands, everything started to get "Jaded"--

I asked Jay to take a look at this thread - and here's what he had to add...

HI,

I finally read what you were talking about on OC punk.
Here are the 'tones facts that I can recall:

I'm from Arcadia and met Danny Ruiz from San Gabriel in late '76, and started to play together with his younger brother and a girl singer, who we later replaced with Kendall on vocals. We recorded the "Child Abuse" songs in November '77.
We knew Kendall because he used to hang around Danny's high school, and he later introduced us to the rest of the guys, Snickers, Rabit & Jerry, who lived in Alhambra to form "The Simpletones of Rosemead" in August '78.
The Beach Blvd album is what gives people the idea that we were an OC band.

The Stains were probably from around that area...maybe Boyle Heights. When ever I drive around East L.A. I think of that band.
