I went to Mater Dei for two years--back in '82-'84. Sounds like not much has changed! I don't know how m,uch money they actually have, but I had a hard time there too--for being a rocker, a heavy metal type, one of only maybe a dozen in the whole school. Punk and New Wave were all the rage and we were ourtcasts. I actually started my punk thing there--a few of the truly hardcore punks were friendly with us and one loaned me a tape--the first Suicidal Tendencies and G.B.H.'s City Baby Attacked by Rats. I switched to a poublic schol in my junior year and I'd have to say that for all its faults Mater Dei had a higher academic standard...overall, not that just as good an education wasn't there for the taking (for the interested) at the school i switched to (Laguna Hills High School.) But with the newfound freedom of public school, i eventually got very very wasted all the time (yes like many punks i have social problems) and ended up dropping out and taking the proficiency. Now I'm 34 with no money, a mountain of debt, and a relatively low wage (even though i have a college degree that I got les than two years ago.) I'm not trying to tell you what to do and it sucks but, in the long run IT DOES matter how things look on paper. On the other hand mater dei is not as superior to EVERY school as i think is largely assumed--the student's interest in obtaining a great education is i think the deciding factor in any case. I'd be interested to know where you're at with this whole Mater Dei thing.
